The short film ALS - As Life Sails is a new production by Segredo Filmes and shows a personal approach made by director Lilih Curi. Through archival material and present-day conversations, she addresses the life of her cousin, Marden, who was diagnosed with ALS - Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a disease that affects the nervous system in a progressive and degenerative way. In Brazil, it is estimated that 12 thousand people suffer from this disease.

The film, of approximately 22 minutes, shows, under the optic of its main character, a perspective of the memory and the affection. The documentary idea was suggested by Marden himself, in 2017, during a visit from his cousin where he revealed his desire to spread knowledge and give visibility to this disease.

At that time, Marden was no longer able to move his legs and arms and his speech was impaired due to the atrophication of his facial muscles. His diagnosis had been confirmed a year before. In 2019, Marden found Super 8mm film rolls, recorded by his father and with this material the idea for the film began to materialize. During the research, other materials emerged: cassette tapes, pictures, as well as other family materials.

Lilih Curi proposes a personal immersion, in this documentary, of her relationship with her cousin, however not presenting the disease through an informative point of view. ALS - As Life Sails, seeks to talk about life, through memory and affection, from the encounters, reunions, connections and reconnections shown, especially with access to images that refer to the past, and, in parallel, challenge how to face the present and see the future.
